The expedition was originally headed up by Sir Ranulph Fiennes who sadly had to leave due to frostbite and it was he who phoned about the matting. He comments, “I spoke to some friends and advisors in the British Atlantic Survey and asked them for the best company in that field and the most reliable retailers or manufacturers, and that’s who I telephoned”. This was because of Plastex’s long-standing reputation in Antarctica where its matting is regularly specified by the British Antarctic Survey for use on Bird Island where it copes exceptionally well in the extremes of temperature.
Heronrib is manufactured from hardwearing non-porous vinyl with a two layer open grid construction and channelled underbars to help water drain away easily in all directions. The matting has an embossed slip resistant surface and impregnated anti-bacterial and anti-fungal additives. This ensures that it is not only safe underfoot but also hygienic for bare feet because it reduces the risk of cross-contamination. It also makes it ideal for use in hospital, healthcare and other hygiene-sensitive environments.
Vynagrip is an industrial grade, heavy duty matting specifically designed to provide a safe and slip resistant surface in rugged working environments. Its deeply etched surface provides a high R11 slip resistance rating when tested to DIN 51130. The matting is extremely hard-wearing yet comfortable underfoot. Besides, thanks to its vinyl construction, it can be easily cut on site and will contour over rough or uneven floors.
Heronrib is available in several colours and is normally supplied in 10m long rolls and widths of 50cm, 1m and 1.22m while Vynagrip is supplied in 5m or 10m rolls and in widths of 60, 91 and 122cm. Individual 80 x 120cm or 100 x 150cm modules are also available.
