Why Heronrib is the ideal fit for ablution areas in mosques

Need to improve safety in your ablution areas? There are three challenges that mosques face when managing slip hazards in wet areas.

Challenge 1: Large amounts of water creates a slip-risk

At mosques across the world, worshippers perform wudu five times a day, a ceremony that involves washing the head, face, feet and hands in mosque ablution areas, prior to walking barefoot into the prayer area. Large amounts of water can pool onto the floor during wudu. The wudu area floor surfaces, often made of marble or ceramic tiles, can become slippery and dangerous for worshippers and staff when wet.

Some mosques have thousands of visitors a day, and are especially busy during prayer time. Lots of barefoot traffic transiting through, combined with water, is an accident waiting to happen.

Ablution areas need self-draining, anti-slip mats. Specifically designed for wet areas with high barefoot traffic, Heronrib automatically self-drains thanks to its channelled underbars that allow four-way drainage – even when confronted with large volumes of water.

Challenge 2: Barefoot worshippers are vulnerable to slips, discomfort and bacteria

Before entering an ablution area in a mosque, visitors have to leave their shoes at the entrance and walk around barefoot. It’s vital that floor surfaces are not only safe to move across, but are hygienic and provide comfort for bare feet.

Heronrib’s embossed surface provides a comfortable underfoot grip, and helps to prevent accidents like slips and trips from occurring. It also helps to protect bare feet from bacterial contamination, thanks to its flexible, non-porous PVC construction with antimicrobial and antifungal additives.

Challenge 3: Ablution areas in mosques must be kept clean

In mosques, hygiene and cleanliness is essential. Ablution areas require an anti-slip solution that can be easily laid over slippery floors and lifted for easy cleaning and maintenance.

Heronrib is a one-piece construction mat that can be rolled out and cut to fit on site, making installation seamless. In addition to its four-way drainage system, Heronrib can be lifted and moved for easy cleaning, so it’s perfectly suited to ablution room requirements where high cleaning standards are important.

More than 1,300 worshippers needed a safe and comfortable surface in the ablution rooms at Dubai’s busy Easa Saleh Al Gurg mosque, so they installed Heronrib.

The mosque’s large surface area, one of the biggest in Dubai, called for a slip-resistant matting solution that could be quickly rolled up and relayed for simple maintenance and cleaning. It was also crucial that worshippers had a comfortable surface to stand and walk on.

With these factors at the forefront, the building material division at Intercare Ltd in Dubai recommended all wet areas of the mosque, including the ablution rooms, be laid with Heronrib matting. Its winning combination of slip-resistance, drainage and hygiene makes it the ideal wudu area matting.
