Heronrib barefoot matting ensures safe walkways
Concerns raised about slippery surfaces at the Blue Lagoon spa in Iceland had management seeking a hygienic, comfortable and slip-resistant mat that could be loose laid over all spa surfaces.
The problem
Less than an hour’s drive from Iceland’s capital Reykjavik, the Blue Lagoon is the largest geothermal seawater spa in the world. It is ranked as the number one tourist destination in Iceland, and its spa, hotel and adjacent wellness centre is visited by more than 400,000 people each year. This huge volume of barefoot traffic contributes to massive quantities of displaced water. Silica added to the spa water also makes the tiles in the changing and shower areas extra slippery. Because of this, the Blue Lagoon needed a barefoot mat that could prevent slips, protect from bacterial contamination and still be comfortable to walk on.

The solution
High visitor numbers and multiple thermal pools required a matting solution that could quickly self-drain, but still be comfortable underfoot. After several products were tested, dark grey Heronrib barefoot mats were chosen for the changing rooms and shower areas, as well as the decking and jetties leading out to the lagoon.
