How do you prevent slipping in an indoor pool used by students, local seniors and people with physical disabilities?

The indoor pool within the Magnolia Independent School District in Texas is used daily by over 300 swimmers, from young kids to senior citizens. Fearing a slip and fall incident, the pool’s management were keen to install a slip-resistant walkway designed for bare feet.

The problem

The Magnolia Independent School District is located just outside Houston, Texas, and manages 17 public schools attended by more than 10,000 students. The district’s indoor swimming pool is used by more than 300 of those students each day, as well as members of the local community. The pool’s management had become concerned that high traffic coupled with wet surrounds could result in injury, and so wanted to install walkways that allowed safe access for everyone using the pool. The venue is also used for student swim-meets, so management were keen that the matting coordinate with the school colours.

The checklist

  • Quickly drains large volumes of water
  • Provides both grip and comfort underfoot
  • Light to handle for easy cleaning and maintenance
  • Protects bare feet from bacterial contamination
  • Coordinates with the school’s colours

The solution

While attending a swimming meet at Texas A&M University, Magnolia’s head coach and aquatic director Terry Jones noticed that matting had been installed around the perimeters of the pool. It wasn’t just the slip-resistance surface that caught his eye but the colour of the matting, which had been ordered in the University’s distinctive collegiate maroon – coincidentally the same hue as Magnolia’s school colour.

After testing the matting around their own pool, the Magnolia district ordered several hundred metres of Heronrib matting to line the lengths of the pool. Specifically designed for wet areas with high barefoot traffic, Heronrib automatically self-drains – even when faced with the largest amounts of water. The embossed surface delivers grip and comfort underfoot, while the antimicrobial and anti-fungal additives ensures excellent hygiene.

"Since we installed Heronrib, we haven't had a single accident around the pool. The matting prevents water building up underneath and the anti-slip surface provides a firm footing for all our swimmers no matter their age or physical ability. We are very proud of our facility and love that fact we were able to order the matting in our school colours."
